Are you staring at a pile of green waste in your backyard and wondering how to get rid of it? You’re not alone. Burnie offers a kerbside green bin service, which means disposing of garden clippings, branches, and other organic debris is easy – in theory. Read on for more information on getting rid of all your garden waste in Burnie.
How much does green waste removal cost in Burnie?
Green waste removal costs in Burnie depend on the method you choose. For DIY options like taking it to the tip or composting, costs can be minimal to free. On the other hand, hiring services like skip bins or professional gardeners can be more convenient but come with a higher price tag. Let’s explore these options to help you find what fits your needs and budget.
Different ways to dispose of green waste
From fortnightly FOGO bin collection to using the Burnie tip, here are some options for green waste removal.
FOGO bin collection
For small-scale garden waste, such as grass clippings, weeds, and other assorted green waste, simply use your FOGO bin with the green lid. It’s collected fortnightly in most areas, and it’s a simple and effective way to keep your garden tidy.
Take green waste to the tip
If you’re doing bigger garden jobs like cutting hedges, trees or removing bushes, your green FOGO bin won’t be enough. For larger loads, the Burnie Waste Management Centre is your go-to option.
NOTE: Burnie City Council no longer provides tip vouchers to homeowners.
However, each resident is entitled to take up to 100kg of green waste to the tip for free. You cand o that as many times as you want, wo while time-consuming and little ridiculous, if you’ve got more than 100kg of green waste, split it into multiple trips.
Anything over 100kg is charged by weight, at a rate of $245 per tonne. Note that only residents are entitled to the 100kg free green waste disposal. Commercial operators are charged a minimum of $24.50 for anything under 100kg.
You can find the Burnie Waste Management Centre at:
289 Mooreville Rd,
Mooreville TAS 7321
If you don’t own a trailer, you can hire one from Bunnings, or you can hit Google for some other local trailer hire option. Bunnings can hook you up with a 6×4 box trailer, and it costs just $28 for four hours. You may need to pay a refundable deposit though, so make sure you’ve got some dollars free.
Call a gardening service
If your garden needs a complete tidy-up along with waste removal, hiring a gardening service is a smart choice. Burnie Gardening Services offers flexible green waste solutions tailored to your needs. Whether it’s clearing out branches after pruning or removing clippings from a lawn mowing session, we’ll help keep costs low while doing all the heavy lifting.
This tip is especially useful if you’re moving out of a rental property or getting a home ready for sale. You’ll likely want a professional garden tidy-up, and it’s a great chance to get everything done at once. This is far cheaper than hiring two different companies to do your gardening and waste removal.
2025 Update: As we touched on earlier, commercial operators like us are charged by weight for all green waste disposal, even under 100kg. So, while we always work with our customers to find the best disposal solutions, the reality is that we’re now unable to use vouchers on your behalf and as such, must charge a fee.
Sadly, the Burnie City Council hasn’t considered how this scheme might affect NDIS participants, the elderly, those who are mobility impaired, people without transport and basically anybody else who can’t physically take green waste to the tip themselves and would rely on their gardener’s help.
Composting
If you’re dealing with manageable amounts of green waste and want to give back to your garden, composting is an excellent option. Grass clippings, leaves, and small trimmings break down beautifully into nutrient-rich compost. All you need is a compost bin or a simple pile in a shady spot. Over time, your waste will transform into a natural fertiliser that can revitalise your soil and plants.
Hire a skip bin
For large-scale projects like clearing an overgrown yard or landscaping, a skip bin is hard to beat. Locally, you could try Skip to Tip, they can fix you up with a skip bin of any size, and they’ll drop it off and collect it for you. These bins can handle significant amounts of green waste, saving you multiple trips to the tip. Keep in mind, skip bin costs vary based on size and duration, but they’re ideal when you’re dealing with big volumes of waste.
